Residence in Sherman Oaks

Residence on an Oak Knoll
Sherman Oaks, California

A 5,800-square-foot, three-story, steel- and concrete-block-frame, stucco- and wood-clad, composition-roof, five-bedroom home with pergola, pavilion, swimming pool and spa.

The clients desired a practical, yet witty, home on their hillside property. They wanted the various individualistic structures to somehow connect, nestling into—rather than perching on—the hill. A long, radial wall encircles the composition, alternately connecting to, and disengaging from, the other built elements. Orientation is provided by a pair of organizing grid systems that intersect at the radius point of the “Great Wall”, where a tower stands watch. Numerous architectural idiosyncrasies and fillips provide the requested wit.
